A three day free rail has commenced on Tuesday on the Takoradi- Tarkwa rail line,3news.com reports.
According to the report, the Ghana Railways Company Limited completed the rehabilitation of the Takoradi- Tarkwa rail as part of the Nana Akufo-Addo led the administration’s agenda.
Reports say the trip is coming after 13 years since a passenger train left to Tarkwa from Takoradi.
Meanwhile, passengers on the trip had applauded the project describing it as a huge relief to them especially for commercial activities between the towns.
The five coaches and one locomotive train set off from the Takoradi Station at about 6.30 am on Tuesday, the report added.
It would be recalled that towards the end of 2019 ,saharareporters.com had reported that President of Ghana,Nana Akufo-Addo signed a concession agreement with the African Development Bank to construct a high speed railway in Accra.
The agreement which was worth $2.6bn was signed during the opening day of the 2nd Africa Investment Forum. The project according to the report is an automated and cost-effective high-capacity public transport system that uses pneumatic propulsion technology. When completed it would transport 380,0000 passengers annually and create about 5,000 jobs at the implementation phase.
The President of the Africa Development Bank, Akinwunmi Adesina had described the project as vital for the growth of Ghana
” What we want is for Africa to invest in Africa. We want to see this kind of thing happening all the time. This project will modernize Ghana, providing green transport for its citizens”.
Many are of the view that commercial activities in Ghana would be boosted with the present government’s investment on rail development.
